Shipping Restrictions
For whatever reason you are sending a parcel to South
Africa, you'll need to provide the detail and value of the contents of the
package, plus relevant insurance documents. Import licences are required for most
types of goods, especially second-hand goods.
Licenses are not required is for bona fide gifts not
exceeding 400 Rand (R400) in value (excluding perfume, alcohol or tobacco). For
gifts not exceeding R400, the sender is required to complete the prescribed
label obtained from any Post Office, where an indication as to the value of the
parcel must be marked. A maximum of two parcels of a value of up to R400 per
item can be sent per calendar year.
Various items are only admitted into the country by
registered mail, and these include coins, banknotes, traveller's checks,
platinum, gold and silver, precious stones and jewellery, as well as other specific
valuable items. For antiques over 100 years old, you'll need a certificate of
authenticity.
Although South Africa provides no specific restrictions for
sending certain items, it does prohibit the sending of all articles related to
lotteries and any prison-made articles. Diamonds and precious stones are not
permitted unless they are registered in First-Class Mail International and
First-Class Package International Service shipments. Honey, or any products or
preparation containing honey as an ingredient may not be imported at all.
South Africa prohibits the import of charged butane gas
lighters and refills, and cigarettes exceeding 2kg per thousand in weight.
Registered endangered species of plants and animals, alive or dead, are
restricted. This restriction includes any parts of or articles made from them.
