Shipping Restrictions

There are standard regulations for sending a parcel to South Africa, as well as various prohibitions and shipping restrictions. Most types of goods require an import license so it is important to make sure the intended recipient holds all the necessary documents required to be able to receive your package, before it is sent out.

For whatever reason you are sending a parcel to South Africa, you'll need to provide the detail and value of the contents of the package, plus relevant insurance documents. Import licences are required for most types of goods, especially second-hand goods.

Licenses are not required is for bona fide gifts not exceeding 400 Rand (R400) in value (excluding perfume, alcohol or tobacco). For gifts not exceeding R400, the sender is required to complete the prescribed label obtained from any Post Office, where an indication as to the value of the parcel must be marked. A maximum of two parcels of a value of up to R400 per item can be sent per calendar year.

Various items are only admitted into the country by registered mail, and these include coins, banknotes, traveller's checks, platinum, gold and silver, precious stones and jewellery, as well as other specific valuable items. For antiques over 100 years old, you'll need a certificate of authenticity.

Although South Africa provides no specific restrictions for sending certain items, it does prohibit the sending of all articles related to lotteries and any prison-made articles. Diamonds and precious stones are not permitted unless they are registered in First-Class Mail International and First-Class Package International Service shipments. Honey, or any products or preparation containing honey as an ingredient may not be imported at all.

South Africa prohibits the import of charged butane gas lighters and refills, and cigarettes exceeding 2kg per thousand in weight. Registered endangered species of plants and animals, alive or dead, are restricted. This restriction includes any parts of or articles made from them. Unlawful reproductions of any works subject to copyright are also prohibited.
